For Rick Miller and Don Myers, it was easy starting a career in construction and demolition…they were born into it in the fine State of NC. But if you are an aspiring general contractor, or want to know how to get started in the “Construction Business”, our team has a few suggestions for getting started down here in sunny South Florida.
REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE: THERE’S NO “ONE WAY” TO GET INTO CONSTRUCTION. (With so many trades and career paths to choose from, it’s really about finding the right fit for YOUR interests and lifestyle.)
If you haven’t decided which construction career(s) interests you? There are numerous “Career Finders” out on the web where you can begin your research. Also check out sites that breakdown the different “Types of Construction”, to get a better idea of what kinds of amazing things you could build – maybe this will help you determine which career to pursue. This link does a good job breaking down the “careers and types”. http://www.careersinconstruction.ca/en/careers/career-finder
Once you’ve discovered what interests you, call up local construction companies and see if you can tour a job site, or call some local unions and ask if they can put you in touch with a journeyperson in your chosen trade, so you can ask them all about their job. It pays to meet people in the industry, and to learn what the work is like. This link takes you to actual job opportunities in FL: https://jobs.myflorida.com/
Once you’ve decided on a career, you can choose which of these options works best for you to get started:
- Register as an apprentice and combine on-the-job training with in-class learning.
- Enroll for post-secondary training at a university, community college or technical institute and study for the construction career of your choice.
- Or, find a job as an entry-level construction worker and learn the skills you need on the job.
There are tons of great Companies to start with right here in South Florida, as well as a handful of very affordable and reputable schools like Palm Beach Community College, FIU, FAU and others. So the opportunity is out there waiting for you to do some research, pick a field, and get started!
